Why do we need to suspend absences?

Suspending Absences

When we start a Separation Anxiety training protocol, one of the most important rules is to only leave your dog alone for as long as they can comfortably handle. For example, if your dog is currently comfortable being alone for 10 minutes, they should not be left alone beyond that time.

Why do we need to suspend absences?

When training a dog with Separation Anxiety, we use a process called systematic desensitization. This simply means gradually exposing your dog to something that would normally be scary, but at a level so mild that it does not cause fear or anxiety.

We only move forward in the training when the dog is showing no signs of fear. This is because fear-based behaviors must be addressed slowly and at the dog’s individual pace. If we move too quickly or skip steps, we risk doing the opposite of desensitization—either worsening the fear or seeing little to no progress at all.

Think of it this way: if I were helping you overcome a fear of tight spaces, I wouldn’t start by putting you in a dark box and expect you to remain calm. In the same way, we don’t push your dog into situations they’re not ready for.

Does this mean I need to stay home all the time and never leave my house?

This is a very common misconception when it comes to Separation Anxiety training and avoiding absences that are longer than your dog can handle. The good news is—no, this does not mean you’re stuck at home. You are absolutely allowed to leave your house.

This process doesn’t rely solely on you. With my help, we’ll create what I call: your village. Your village is a network of helpers who support you and ensure your dog isn’t exposed to scary amounts of alone time while they’re learning.

Your village may include family members, friends, pet sitters, dog walkers, trusted neighbors, local groups, daycare, and more! You won’t be navigating Separation Anxiety training on your own—you’ll have support and a plan every step of the way.
